Do's and Don'ts

DON’T: Use Your Left Hand When Giving/Receiving

In Indonesia generally, using your left hand when passing something to somebody (for example, money) or handshaking with someone is generally considered disrespectful. It is preferred that you use your right hand. It maybe an easy thing to pass by but mistaken in the process could bring you an impression of impoliteness. Although not all Balinese is strictly considering it, but it is better to always be nice to everybody.

DO: Leave Your Shoes Outside

When entering especially people’s homes or special parts of the temple, it is considered impolite to keep your shoes on. Try to wear footwear that you can easily slip on and off, as it’s likely you will be expected to remove it regularly.

DO: Cover Up In The Temples

It is very important that visitors dress and act modestly when entering the temples This includes covering up for both men and women, a sarong is usually lent by the entrance. It is also important to remember that women on period are not allowed to enter the temples. So it is suggested that if you are planning on visiting several temples in Bali, to dress up in a modest way.

DON’T: Touch People’s Heads

Never touch people in the head for any excuses. Indonesians believe that the head is the most sacred part of the body and only elderly people who is in relations with them are allowed to touch them in the head only with caring act. You have to be aware of the situation whether it is playful or serious until you decide to do so.

DO: Be Careful Where You Step

Balinese people prays 3 times daily. In the morning, at noon and on sunset. At those times, you will found a lot of small gifts and offerings by the entrances of housings and hotels. Be careful not to step on them as it is unlikely to be understood although it is not deliberately done. You will also found many incense and flowers offered inside a small parcel made of palm leaves. So it is best to look out where you stepping into.

DON’T: Drink Tap Water
Bottled water is plentiful and cheap in Bali so it wouldn't be a problem for you. Also, most of the minimarts are open 24 hours daily. Tap water in bali is highly contaminated with led and causes corrosion to iron pipes so it can bring you illness if you try consuming it. It is also best to prepare a bottled water to brush your teeth.

DO: Bargain - But Be Reasonable

Bargaining is very common in traditional markets in Indonesia, but it is best not to push it too hard. It maybe small but most of the time it is more for them than for you. Bargaining is expected but always be reasonable and respectful. Always be respectful.

What To Expect in Bali

We have to agree that Bali is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. But we also have to agree that Bali is also one of the most hectic islands in the world. Traffic, crimes, frauds, etc. can be found in this island. The problematic issue that has the highest impact is the traffic. You will have to spare at least 30 minutes to 1 hour from the usual time to travel to one place from another. You can be trapped in traffic for 20 minutes or more. Avoid leaving in a pressed time to if you decide to travel. After all, it is better to be early than late. The government have improved the city landscaping and building new roads that should tackle all the problems relating to traffic, but so far, there are some streets that needs to be avoided in a certain time.

Crime is something else. Since the economy is growing rapidly in Bali, There are a lot of people coming from the other islands in Indonesia. For example, the closest, Java. Unfortunately, since the economy attract so many emigrants, the working field can't keep up with the fast growing number of emigrants. It is unfair to generalize, but sometimes, there are so many people takes the fastest and easier way to fulfill their needs. So take care of your belongings, always lock the door before you leave and do not wear too many accessories during your daily activity.

Apart from those, Bali is a beautiful tropical island with a strong cultural and religion approach. You can always see the green rice field, the lush tropical jungle, the sun and the inviting beaches. Not to mention the hospitality of the people. Everyone is not afraid to share smiles and laughter. The warm welcoming act will sway you away and probably bring thoughts of staying in the island. Some places even have exotic animals living side by side with human. The unforgettable thing is the will of the people to help each other and build a life in harmony.
